Not Quite a Beehive

Last summer, I had the pleasure of having a hornet's nest in my back porch area. We would have people come over and they would be disturbed, and rightly so, by the alien intruders. Mostly guys would want to get rid of it immediately. I kind of had a "they're not bothering me, so I'm not going to bother them" kind of attitude and left them alone.

But today, in between conference sessions, I just decided to take it down. For some reason I thought the outer shell would be stiffer, but it felt like holding a soft origami ball. I wasn't able to remove it completely intact, so I thought I'd just tear it apart.

Starla was fascinated.

She's such a pretty girl.

One of the most favorite things I discovered was that the hornet's nest was tiered. It was like finding a wedding cake of combs inside of a surprise ball of bark and spit.

They say that the most common pattern in nature is the hexagon. I can understand why and that's because God is rad.

My final favorite thing about this nest was the pattern left behind on the ceiling of the porch. Circles encasing one another, each one completely closed and separate from the other.

that is the coolest and scariest thing ever. too bad you couldn't remove it intact. it would have made an awesome halloween decoration that you could have passed off as something that you made.

Neat! If you still have it around when I visit next, I want to see it.

Oh, and this is the best pair of blogged sentences I've read all week: "They say that the most common pattern in nature is the hexagon. I can understand why and that's because God is rad."
